***No School September 7th (Labor Day)***

Reading: This week we are starting reading groups! I will pulling small groups to work on practicing retelling fables and identifying character traits. We will be using transitional words to show the sequence of events. We will also be learning the difference between a character trait and a physical trait. Character traits describe a character based on his/her words or actions (examples: greedy, jealous, excited, independent, etc...) We will use evidence from the fables we are ready to support our answers.

Writing: This week in writing will be researching reasons why cats and dogs make good pets. We will use the research to make our own opinions about which one would make a better pet. On Friday, we will have a friendly debate using our reasons we researched to try and persuade the students who have a different opinion. We will learn and practice using friendly ways to disagree with others and share opinions.

Science/Social Studies: This week we are starting government by discussing the importance of rules and laws. We will discuss why they are needed, who makes them, and what happens if they are broken. We will also be introduced to some fun and crazy laws from other states and sort them by if they are put in place out of respect or safety.

Grammar: We will be sorting nouns and words that are not nouns for a grade. This week we will start to identify the differences between common nouns, pronouns, and proper nouns.

How can you practice at home this week?

1. http://www.turtlediary.com/kids-games/ela/nouns.html  (noun games online)

2. Use the OREO format to write a persuasive letter at home. Some ideas might be:
* try and persuade someone why a color is better than any other color
*try and persuade someone why football or baseball is better than the other one
*try and convince your parents to make your favorite meal or dessert

3. Retell/Recount a fiction story you are reading at home. Make sure to include transition words. Do not leave out the ending or important details!

4. Practice retelling/recounting by telling what happens in each chapter you are reading at home. Keep a reading journal to keep track of this. (This will also be helpful for AR tests!)
