Reading: This week we are working on comparing and contrasting. I have noticed that students are able to identify some details that are the same and some that are different, but they are missing others. We will be practicing identifying the main idea of each paragraph first. We will then go sentence by sentence to look for information that is similar and information that is different.
Writing: This week we will vote on our next research project. The new research project will start in January. We will focus on paragraph formation and checking our work for mistakes.
Science/Social Studies: This week we are taking a test on soil and making a North Pole map to show what we have learned in geography.
Special Info: Thursday will be an entire day of coding activities!!!! Don't forget to ask your child what he/she did that day!

Reading: This week we are completing the Fall State of Ohio Assessments. We are doing it in two parts. We will also continue analyzing and comparing and contrasting the plots of two different stories by the same other with similar characters.
Writing: This week we will making sure all of our research about Christmas in other countries is complete and accurate. We are practicing skimming for information. We will start planning some of our paragraphs as well.
Science/Social Studies: This week are comparing political maps to physical maps in geography and we are reviewing the layers of soil and learning about different types of soil in science.
Special Info: In December we will be doing many things to celebrate computer science specifically with code.org. The third graders will start this week by helping to introduce how to code to the other grade levels. December 17th the third graders will get to spend an entire day experimenting with code!

AIR Testing this week
This week we will be taking the fall AIR English Language Arts Assessment. We have split the three hour testing time to two 1.5 hours blocks. We will take the first 1.5 hour tomorrow (12/1) and the other 1.5 hour portion Weds. (12/2). The 3rd grade AIR ELA test is completely online which is why we have been doing all our assessments online in reading this year. Please encourage your child to do the following:
- get a good sleep the night before
- eat breakfast (or get it here)
- arrive to school on time
- answer every question
- read each article at least two times before attempting the question
- eliminate silly answers first
- use evidence from the articles to support your answers
- try your best!!!!!!

Practice AIR
Today we took a practice AIR Assessment in class online. This was done for only an hour and the purpose was for districts to check their wifi and make sure that districts all have the capability to give the online assessments all at the same time. The awesome thing about this practice test is that it gave the students and teachers a chance to really see the format of AIR and what typically questions might be like for math and reading. The students had a chance to play around with the tools and ask questions after it. We will continue to take our quizzes and assessments in reading online and I will continue to strive to make these assessments mimic what they will see on the AIR fall assessment (taken Dec 1-2) and the AIR Spring Assessment (take in April). Please feel free to ask your student about what they noticed or what may have surprised them on this practice test.

Reading: This week we introduced comparing and contrasting two fiction stories with the same author (like from a series). We did this together by going over the fiction parts (characters, setting, conflict, theme, main events, and solution) from two stories. We then used a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the parts of fiction. We will be taking an Engrade Quiz on nonfiction comprehension this week as the students read about the first Thanksgiving and answer questions about what they read.
Writing: This week we will be practicing editing a letter. The students will use proofreading marks to try and find all 12 mistakes in the letter. Finding mistakes and realizing it is okay to make mistakes as they are they are corrected is tough for third graders.
Language: We are introducing idioms and prefixes. Most of the students seem to know many of the well known idioms, but they did not realize their purpose or that they were called idioms. Most of the students also know basic prefixes.
Science/Social Studies: This week are taking a quick mini quiz on the layers of soil. In social studies we are continuing geography by leaning how to read a grid map.

Reading: This week we working with me on identifying a character's motivation to do something. We will be really be taking deeper looks at characters and their actions/traits/motivations. We will also be starting an Achieve3000 contest for November and December. The class that passes the most lessons (the first try) will earn a beach party!
Writing: This week we will be researching traditions, decorations, and food associated with Christmas and countries around the world. We will be using this research to make a brochure by the end of the nine weeks. This is our first step. This will also give us practice with researching and finding information online.
Language: We are introducing metaphors and practicing writing similes
Science/Social Studies: This week we are starting our soil unit by investigating soil. We will be looking at soil to analyze what can be found in it. What is it? We will also be starting our geography unit by reviewing cardinal directions.

Reading: This week we are taking our second quarter pretest in reading to show what we may already know about the content being taught this week as well as areas we need to spend more time on. We will also be taking our first quarter post-test to show what we learned the first quarter. I am excited to see improvements from our pretest at the beginning of last quarter. We are starting to look at character motivations as well as character traits. Character traits is a review from last quarter, but motivations is new. We will be looking at WHY characters behave the way they do using evidence from the story.
Writing: This week we will continue to research if flavored milk should stay in our school or if we should get rid of it. I have given suggestions to help students improve their letters and they will be working on using the suggestions to edit and correct their letters this week.
Language: We are starting figurative language this quarter. We will start by learning about similes and why authors may use them when they write.
Science/Social Studies: This week we are finishing our cardboard design challenges. We have also been given the opportunity to write and publish a book created by our class. We will be using a Thanksgiving theme in hopes of reading it to the younger grades closer to the holiday. This week we will do the rough drafts of our writings.

I apologize for the late update this week. I was out sick Tuesday and Wednesday :(
Reading: This week we are reviewing for our common assessments next week. We are specifically reviewing recounting, asking questions, and character traits. We will do this by reading chapters of Wayside School (they love this book) and practice identifying character traits, retelling the plot of the chapter, and asking questions about the chapter. On Friday we will review the types of questions we may see on the common assessment (since it is an online assessment) and play an online review game (they will love it!)
Writing: This week we will be finishing up our character trait paragraphs on google docs. We will fix any spelling or capital errors as well.
Science/Social Studies: This week we discovering the difference between a mixture and a solution in science by eating/drinking both! We will also be narrowing our cardboard challenges down to one idea by compromising the ideas we all have. We will do final sketches so we can start building next week.

1. Please practice retelling through typing by reading a picture book at home and typing in your own words what happened. The students seem to struggle with the typing out part. They can write out their ideas first and then type if that helps them.
2. Do a noun/adjective, verb, and adverb sort. Read a page of a chapter book and practice finding nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

Socktober!!!
We are collecting new pairs of socks for the entire month of October. We are doing this to celebrate Socktober! Socks are being collected to go to the homeless before the winter months. Our goal is 250 pairs of new socks from our school! All students who bring in a pair of clean socks will be in a video at the end of October to be sent to Kid President!

Reading: This week are taking an online quiz to show our knowledge of recounting, character traits, and morals. This is also practice with the online test format. Students will have multiple choice, short answer, and extended response. They will be expected to use evidence from the stories they read to support their answers and type answers when needed. Some answers may require more than one answer (it will indicate how many) so students need to read carefully.
Writing: This week we will be trying to find research to support our different opinions about flavored milk in school. Should it stay in school or be taken out? The students will look for reasons/examples to support where they stand on the issue. We will also be using google documents for the first time to type a paragraph with the ten character traits they feel represent them that they identified last week. They will digitally share this paragraph with me so I can make suggestions and give it back to them to edit.
Science/Social Studies: This week we are discussing citizenship with regards to rights and responsibilities. We will be discussing our rights and responsibilities at home, school, our community, and our country. We will also be working on our cardboard design challenge. We will be drawing blue prints of one or two of our ideas and labeling the components. We will be split into groups to discuss the function of each of our ideas so we can narrow them down next week.
Grammar: We will be practicing with adjectives this week. Reminder that adjectives describe a noun.
